Hello and welcome back! I've been sick with the flu for what feels like ages now and I'm finally getting better. After five consecutive days bed-ridden days, I told myself that enough was enough and I had to start at least acting like I was better so I could fool my body into thinking healthy thoughts again. I'm not exactly sure it works that way but they say "mind over matter" so why not give it a try.

I'm sure we can all agree that being sick is the pits but being sick when it's beautiful and sunny out is torture. On top of a fever I was battling an extremely runny nose and dry lips but let me just tell you that my savior, aside from the obvious Tylenol Extra Strength and NyQuil, were these little tubes of Bite Beauty's Agave Lip Mask.

I had tubes stashed in pretty much every room of my house.

I felt like a Sponge Bob character where at any moment my lips could turn into this gross crusty mess because I was so dehydrated. I also felt border OCD because every my lip mask would wear off, I'd reapply a new layer.

So, did it work?

Yes, but I still had some unwanted dry bits which is where the Agave Lip Scrub came in handy.

Aside from being there for me when I get sick, I use the Agave Lip Mask every night before bed as part of my regular skincare routine. I also ALWAYS have a tube with me when I travel. Flying is so harsh on the skin and lips so it just makes sense. If you don't want to touch your fingers to your mouth when you're traveling, Bite gives us a solid version of their lip mask in a tube. Hygiene and convenience. Bite, you guys think of everything.

When Diana and I started the What’s In My Bag series I thought; A) it would be a cute and fun way to show you guys what we actually use in our lives, and B) it would be interesting to see how our lip products change month to month and season to season.

What I’m most surprised about is B.

In January I was all about neutrals and nudes.

In February I started to introduce reds back into rotation.

Now in March, I don’t seem to want to wear any other shade than red. Whether it’s fully pigmented colour or a sheer wash on the lips, red is the clear winner for me this month.

HOW TO WEAR RED LIPSTICK WHILE LOOKING EFFORTLESS

Lipsick logo.jpg
To bring a red lip to life and make it look effortless and less precious, I like to add a pop of red to the fats of my cheeks. I do this by first applying my blush as normal. Milani’s Luminoso is an all-around flattering peachy shade that flatters most skintones. Then I take a bright orange-red blush, like Chanel’s 380 So Close and I apply it only to the center of my cheeks. It brightens my complexion instantly and pulls together a red lip.  Finally, I like to keep my eye makeup to a minimum by only using mascara. This keeps the vibe more casual and not at all overdone.

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipsticks Unearthed Collection + Limited Edition Shades - lipsick.me - lipstick beauty blog by nathalie martin_7756.jpg

The brilliant folks from Bite Beauty, who just happen to make some of my favourite lip products ever, have just expanded their collection of Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipsticks with the Unearthed Collection - inspired by natural, gritty beauty of young root vegetables just plucked from the earth.

The collection includes ten new shades, four which are limited edition, of their rich, high pigmented colour. They're also super nourishing thanks to the natural monoi butter and coconut oil. The cruelty-free brand uses natural and organic ingredients, without paragons, sulfates, petrochemicals, or phthalates.

Handmade in their Toronto factory in small batches, Bite’s Liquified Lipsticks retail for $28 (Canadian) and are available starting February 13, 2018 at Sephora.ca, and on March 2, 2018 in Sephora stores.

Oh hi, Happy New Year. I know it’s mid-January, but the year is still “new”, fam.

Don’t know where you are, but we’re in Toronto and it’s hella cold here. Not only is it cold, it’s sick season and everyone’s getting a piece.

Here are some basic rules when you’re trying to keep your lips looking good when conditions are harsh. Plus, some secret weapons to make sure you don’t get chapped.

1. DRINK UP
This is pretty obvious, but I sometimes neglect to do it and I instantly regret it. Drink all the water. Drink all the tea. Drink none of the liquor when you’re sick.

2. NO LICKING
Saliva dries your lips out. End of story. Next.

3. BUY THE GOOD STUFF
Buy the good stuff – listen, I love saving money, but I don’t play around with facial tissue. Get the stuff with the lotion when you’re sick. Same with lip balm, don’t play and buy the super emollient, medicated stuff.

And now for your weapons – here are some products that I turn to again and again when I’m trying to keep my lips nice and supple.

BITE BEAUTY Prismatic Pearl Multistick

BITE BEAUTY Prismatic Pearl Multistick Review - _6483.jpg

Between my mum and I, we're pretty much unofficial spokespeople for Bite Beauty. Don't believe me? Just have a look at any of my previous articles and you'll see what I mean - Bite Does It Again With This New Product and REVIEW: Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick.

Anytime they launch something new, I get excited to see what's up.

This time they're bringing us major shimmer with their Prismatic Pearl Multistick - a multifunctional product that can be used on the lips, eyes, and cheeks.

The five shades are available now, exclusively at Sephora online and in stores.

BITE BEAUTY Prismatic Pearl Multistick Review - _6440.jpg

I'm a total sucker for packaging and I can't get enough of these holographic boxes for Bite Beauty's new Prismatic Pearl Multisticks.

Bite Beauty's Prismatic Pearl Multisticks

Blush Pearl - metallic white with pink shimmer
Oyster Pearl - metallic taupe with silver shimmer
Peacock Pearl - metallic teal with black, red and green shimmer
Rose Pearl - metallic rose with green and violet shimmer
Pink Pearl - metallic pink with red and pink shimmer

These multisticks have major versatility and crazy shimmer. Inspired by Tahitian pearls, the silicone-free formula contains 35 percent powder which helps the formula shift from creamy to powder once it's set, making it ideal for eyes and cheeks in addition to using it on the lips. They are buildable, breathable and blend easily with fingers or a brush if that's more your thing. As with all of Bite's other products, the Prismatic Pearl Multisticks are handmade in Toronto with organic and natural ingredients.

BITE BEAUTY Prismatic Pearl Multistick Review - _6457.jpg

What's great about Bite's Prismatic Pearl Multistick is how diverse the product is. You can use it on your lips as a wash of shimmery colour, and top it off with Bite's iconic Agave Lip Mask for a glowing, natural look. It also works great layered on top of your favourite lipstick if you want to add a hint of colour and shimmer.

Bad & Bougie: The Best Luxury Lip Balms

best luxe lip balms - 05302.jpg

What was your initiation into lip balm? Mine was Lip Smackers at age 10, which always came in fun flavours, but never provided enough moisture.

Now that I’m a little older and a little wiser (and ya, a little richer), I find myself straight up splurging on Lip Balms. Sure, there are cheap and cheerful options, but these are the crème de la crème which are totally worth the hype.

What's In Your Bag This December: 14 Lipsticks Nathalie Loves

what's in my bag - lipsick.me_5739.jpg

As the founder of a blog 100% dedicated to lipstick, it’s no surprise that I’m usually carrying at least six lipsticks on my person. It’s not at all on purpose and in fact, it’s more of a comfort thing. I’d hate to be caught in a situation where I don’t have what I need - let’s say a lip balm for hydration, a matte lipstick for longevity or a creme lipstick for colour and hydration. I know. It’s insane.

Using my lipstick neurosis as inspiration, Diana and I thought it would be great to start a “What’s In My Bag Series” each month. We’ll take turns of course as we ask one another, “Hey, what’s in your bag?”

what's in my bag - lipsick.me_5709.jpg

I always carry around a compact in my cosmetics bag and it's not always powder. This NARS compact is the limited edition Orgasm packaging and it's particularly special to me because I did a project with them at the start of this year for their Facebook page for the Orgasam anniversary collection. This blush is also the first high-end blush I ever bought when I was in my teens.

Pictured here are also my Felony Case marble iPhone case (made with real marble btw!), my quilted patent leather CHANEL cardholder and a random bottle of nail polish. This one here is called Jealous Boyfriend, flattering green-blue, from their Miracle Gel collection. I'm currently super obsessed with these polishes because they last a week before they start chipping.

3 Liquid Lipsticks We Love! (Under $35!!)

Between Diana and I, we probably have hundreds of lipsticks in our collection. Yup. Hundreds. We've tried many different brands, from designer labels like Tom Ford to drugstore finds like NYX. At the end of the day, there are only three liquid lipsticks I’d trust my life with and that’s because they are consistently reliable, hardworking and last. Best of all, they won’t bring the bank as they’re all under $35.

NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment

Our favourite new lipstick of the year has a thin consistency, almost to that of water, and stays on all day! We love the thin wand that gives us a perfectly outlined pout over time!

FINISH: Matte
WHY WE LOVE IT: Excellent colour pay off! Weightless formula.
FAVOURITE SHADE: American Woman (chestnut rose)

SMASHBOX Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick

Before we fell in love with Nars, there was Smashbox and this liquid lipstick is the only one I ever trusted to stay on without retouching, throughout TV appearances and photoshoots

FINISH: Matte
WHY WE LOVE IT: Excellent colour pay off! Stays on forever!
FAVOURITE SHADE: Out Loud (deep orange)

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipstick

This indulgent liquid lipstick is glossy, sweet and smells of vanilla. The colour pay off is incredible and we love that it’s made with natural and organic ingredients here in Toronto!

FINISH: Glossy
WHY WE LOVE IT: Excellent colour pay off! Hydrating!
FAVOURITE SHADE: Purée (burnt orange)

BEAUTY TIP:

Hydrate Lips before applying liquid lipsticks, especially with matte formulas, to keep them from dying up! Our faves are Chanel’s lip balm and Bite Beauty’s Lip Mask! Pucker up!

My favourite lip liners + trying some newbies

My favourite lip liners + trying some newbies_8814.JPG

Hello and happy Labour Day weekend. If you're here reading the Lipsick blog today, then thank you! In today's post I want to have a quick look at the wonderful world of lip liners. I have some good ol' classic MAC liners to share with you, along with some newbies that I've never tried until now from NARS and Buxom. If you're like me and believe that lip liners are the foundation of the lips, then keep reading.

BUXOM PlumpLine Lip Liner, $20

These thick lip liners from Buxom are excellent when you're if you're in a rush but don't want to skip the step of a lining your lips. The pigmented matte formula is neither dry, which they don't tug on the lips, nor are they overly creamy which means lipstick adheres nicely and the point stays sharp. The brush at the end of the lip liner makes contouring easy and saves space in our makeup bag from carrying yet another beauty product. Bonus, the lip plumping formula makes it easy for us to skip the lipstick altogether and wear this bad boy as a lip crayon. The collection comes in 20 shades which range from nudes to pinks and browns and retail for $20 Canadian or $17 USD.

SALE ALERT!

ULTA is currently having a HUGE summer sale and the Buxom PlumpLine's are on sale for $8.50 each!!! Yes fellow Canadians, Ulta does ship to Canada now! While you're there, be sure to stock up on this amazing clear vinyl train case for $12 that we're so obsessed with here at Lipsick.

NARS Precision Lip Liners, $30

These new wooden lip pencils from NARS are a must have for every lip stick lover out there. They're super precise and stay sharp so that you can get the best line from your bold lip. They're highly pigmented and long lasting and have really impressed me so far. I paired mine with the new Nars Powermatte Lip Pigments (review coming soon!) and I couldn't believe that my bold purple lip was still going strong after a long boozy lunch. If you haven't had a chance to try these yet, you need to!

LIPSICK TIP:

Keep your lines precise by sharpening your pencil before each use.

Bite Beauty The Lip Pencil, $20

This creamy lip pencil by Bite Beauty was released in stages with 25 colours earlier this year, and another 25 shades most recently. The entire range covers everything from pale nudes to white, black, navy, reds, pinks and violets, and oranges. They're highly pigmented, creamy in texture and infused with shea butter and castor seed oil. The one thing about this pencil is that the lid seems to be faulty on both releases so be careful with your designer bags. I had to have my Louis Vuitton pouch professionally cleaned because the liner got everywhere. Sadly, this wasn't the first time. Regardless, don't let this hold you back from trying out these awesome lip pencils by this Canadian brand. Just make sure you house it in a cheapy makeup bag for good measure.

MAC Lip Pencils, $22

Probably the most well known of the bunch here, MAC lip pencils are a staple in every makeup bag. My favourite nude shade ever has always been Boldly Bare and I've worn my out to the nub a few times because it's that good. It's the type of nude that won't alter the shade of the lipstick colour that gets layered over top and will prolong the wear of your lipstick in general. Win / win right? With 41 iconic shades in the collection, MAC can do no wrong.

Bite does it again with this new product

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipstick_7680.jpg

BITE BEAUTY

AMUSE BOUCHE LIQUIFIED LIPSTICK

When it comes to lip products there are few brands where I can confidently stand behind the entire product range. Scratch that. There is only one brand where I can confidently stand behind every single product and that is Toronto-based, Bite Beauty. From their sweet tasting, highly-pigmented colours and hydrating formulas, Bite knows what they're doing and how to get into my makeup bag each season.

When I received a PR package containing twelve (out of the twenty shades) of their new Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipsticks, I was intrigued to dive in and start testing. Here's what's up.

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipstick_7786.jpg

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Don't let the matte tubes fool you, these liquid lipsticks are glossy AF and highly pigmented like the OG Amuse Bouche Lipsticks. For a sheer look, add dab a bit of this liquid lipstick with your fingers and pat it on your lips. The result is a sheer wash of colour for that "just bitten" look.

For full colour pay off, line your lips with one of Bite's corresponding creamy Lip Liners and pop the Liquified Lipstick on top.

SWEET, RICH & DIVERSIFIED

Castor seed oil (known for its moisturizing properties and nourishing fatty acids), Monoi butter, coconut oil and a touch of vanilla, give the lipsticks a naturally sweet taste that feels good on the lips. If you've ever wondered why Bite tastes so sweet, it's the vanilla. Each product gets a touch of this stuff to make the sensory experience that much better.

One thing I have always loved about Bite is their diversity in lip colours, which is actually pretty rare in the world of cosmetics. Even with twenty shades under the Liquified Lipstick line up, the variety of colours is massively impressive. Let's be real, makeup giants like Chanel and Cover Girl are still producing colours that look best on white women with fair skin with cool undertones. Sure they have some beautiful colours that cater to olive skin tones but a majority of their shades are for cool, paler skins. I can't help but wonder if being Toronto-based makes Bite more conscientious of their shade line up. Toronto is one of the best multi-cultural cities in the world after all and as a Hispanic woman, I really appreciate when brands cater to my skin tone. I grew up wearing horrific shades of pink-based foundations and cool-toned lip glosses because back in the 90's there were very little options for women of colour. As a result, I always pay attention to when a brand acknowledges diversity in skin tones so I massively applaud Bite for their variety in lip shades.

I recently reviewed new lipsticks launches from Smashbox and bareMinerals and I was disappointed in both brand's lack of colour diversity. Bite's red shades are beautiful and rich and their burnt orange shade, Purée is so flattering on my skin that it makes my entire complexion glow. Though I'm not a fan of pinks I whole heartedly acknowledge that Éclair, is a pretty neutral pink that will flatter fair complexions beautifully. Whip and Caramelized are pale nudes that that will flatter cool and warm skin tones and then there's Flambé, a stunning red-orange shade that makes me weak in the knees.

BRAISED (deep scarlet), CANDIED (electric cherry-pink), CARAMELIZED (creamy butterscotch),CHUTNEY (rich mauve), DEMI-GLACE (chocolate-mauve), ÉCLAIR (soft rose), FLAMBÉ (vivid orange-red), INFUSE (dark cherry), MARSALA (deep purple-red) PURÉE (burnt orange), SUPREME (rich fuchsia), WHIP (blushed beige)

SO, ARE THEY WORTH IT?

Real talk; Lipsick co-creator, Diana, was not the biggest fan of Bite when she first tried it. I think part of her was challenging me because I felt so passionate about them and she wanted to push back. A year and a half after I introduced her to the brand, she's all about the Agave Lip Mask and now she's dying to get her hands on her own tube of Purée. That, in my opinion, speaks volumes to Bite Beauty overall. Seriously, did you read her review on Glossier's lip products? She's not messing around and has no time for overhyped makeup.

Overall, I love this product. Well done, you've done it again Bite. With a solid formula and stunning colour line up, I know these are gonna be a hit. The only negative is actually a non-issue if you ask me, and that is the lasting power. If you wear a gloss formula, you are not going to have the same lasting power as a matte liquid lipstick. That's just fact. Easy fix though, it's called a lip liner and all you have to do is fill in your entire mouth with a liner first. It'll act as a primer and give the gloss something to stick to therefore last longer.

At $28 a tube, these glosses are affordable and luxurious and will leave you wanting more.
