Hello and welcome back! I've been sick with the flu for what feels like ages now and I'm finally getting better. After five consecutive days bed-ridden days, I told myself that enough was enough and I had to start at least acting like I was better so I could fool my body into thinking healthy thoughts again. I'm not exactly sure it works that way but they say "mind over matter" so why not give it a try.

I'm sure we can all agree that being sick is the pits but being sick when it's beautiful and sunny out is torture. On top of a fever I was battling an extremely runny nose and dry lips but let me just tell you that my savior, aside from the obvious Tylenol Extra Strength and NyQuil, were these little tubes of Bite Beauty's Agave Lip Mask.

I had tubes stashed in pretty much every room of my house.

I felt like a Sponge Bob character where at any moment my lips could turn into this gross crusty mess because I was so dehydrated. I also felt border OCD because every my lip mask would wear off, I'd reapply a new layer.

So, did it work?

Yes, but I still had some unwanted dry bits which is where the Agave Lip Scrub came in handy.

Aside from being there for me when I get sick, I use the Agave Lip Mask every night before bed as part of my regular skincare routine. I also ALWAYS have a tube with me when I travel. Flying is so harsh on the skin and lips so it just makes sense. If you don't want to touch your fingers to your mouth when you're traveling, Bite gives us a solid version of their lip mask in a tube. Hygiene and convenience. Bite, you guys think of everything.

When Diana and I started the What’s In My Bag series I thought; A) it would be a cute and fun way to show you guys what we actually use in our lives, and B) it would be interesting to see how our lip products change month to month and season to season.

What I’m most surprised about is B.

In January I was all about neutrals and nudes.

In February I started to introduce reds back into rotation.

Now in March, I don’t seem to want to wear any other shade than red. Whether it’s fully pigmented colour or a sheer wash on the lips, red is the clear winner for me this month.

HOW TO WEAR RED LIPSTICK WHILE LOOKING EFFORTLESS

Lipsick logo.jpg
To bring a red lip to life and make it look effortless and less precious, I like to add a pop of red to the fats of my cheeks. I do this by first applying my blush as normal. Milani’s Luminoso is an all-around flattering peachy shade that flatters most skintones. Then I take a bright orange-red blush, like Chanel’s 380 So Close and I apply it only to the center of my cheeks. It brightens my complexion instantly and pulls together a red lip.  Finally, I like to keep my eye makeup to a minimum by only using mascara. This keeps the vibe more casual and not at all overdone.

LIPSICK.ME - CHANEL ROUGE COCO LIP BLUSH - 412, 414, 416421 copy.jpg

CHANEL’s new ROUGE COCO LIP BLUSH is the latest from the luxury beauty brand. It’s a multi-purpose product which features a soft and silky gel formula that melts into cheekbones to leave a caress of colour so fine, soft and supple that you will forget that it’s even there.

We recently visited CHANEL’s latest beauty pop-up, the COCO Game Centre at Holt Renfrew on Bloor Street in Toronto. We were treated to a quick makeup application session and were able to see the 18 new shades dreamed up by Lucia Pica, including 6 new shades of ROUGE COCO LIP BLUSH.

Freedom. Creativity. Personality. This is a line that encourages spontaneity and writes its own rules. We can’t rave enough about these. After the event, we had dinner and several drinks, and the LIP BLUSH barely budged.

CHANEL ROUGE COCO LIP BLUSHES retail for $37 each and are available at your local CHANEL counter.

YSL Volupté Liquid Colour Balm

YSL Volupté Liquid Colour Balm - lipsick.me - canadian beauty and lipstick blog - nathalie martin_7438.jpg

It’s kind of funny that Valentine’s Day comes during the winter, because it’s one of the most challenging times to keep your lips looking super fresh. Even when you’re constantly moisturizing, you run the risk of having dry lips when you apply the wrong coloured product.

Enter YSL Beauté new Volupté Liquid Colour Balm, an amazing new product that leaves lips perfectly moisturized while adding a gorgeous tint that lasts through the day (and multiples coffees - we did the test!)

We got three gorgeous shades from the brand, all of which would look great on all skin tones. So go on, pucker up.

What's In Your Bag This January: Diana's Lipstick Diary

Dior Rouge Dior Couture Colour 080 Red Smile, Kiehl's Butterstick Lip Treatment Simply Rose, Saje Natural Wellness Tingle Lips Peppermint Lip Balm - lipsick.me_6027.jpg

Supposedly the average woman owns 40 makeup products and only carries 5 daily. This could easily turn into a post about how gender specific studies, especially about makeup, are antiquated and insulting but that’s beside the point. Imma talk to you real quick about what’s in my bag.

I own a lot more than 40 makeup products – I think I may own more than 40+ lipsticks alone. While the politics behind the aforementioned study are troubling, there is some truth to the fact that many of us own a ton of cosmetics, but only really use a few daily.

On the daily, I only really carry 3-4 lip products and a compact. Here’s some deets about what’s in my bag right now.

moisturizing lip treatments - dior, saje natural wellness and kiehl's.jpg

1. Rouge Dior Couture Colour in 080, Red Smile

I’ve been a Rouge Dior girl for years, but this is a new shade for me. This highly pigmented, matte lipstick is quite comfortable and gives off a satin effect. For reference, I currently use Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Foundation in 3N2 Honey and this is red that contrasts very well with my skintone (warm/neutral).

2. Kiehl’s Butterstick Lip Treatment in Simply Rose

Perfect texture, ideal tint – that’s all you need to know about this stuff. Some of the reviews say it doesn’t taste very good, but honestly, I want to know who these people are cause it’s a lie. Fairly certain that this shade would look amazing on everyone.

3. Sage Tingle Lips Tingly Lip Balm

I feel like I’m living my best life when I put this stuff on. It’s made with all the good stuff – coconut, peppermint and shea. I’m actually obsessed with all of Sage’s Tingle Mint products, so good.

Diana's Louis Vuitton clutch includes Chanel face powder, Dior lipstick in Red Smile, Kiehl's Butterstick Lip Treatment In Simply Rose, Sage Natural Wellness Tingle Mint peppermint lip balm, Gucci sunglasses and eyeglasses, Louis Vuitton wallet and her Macbook Pro, all carried in a nylon Tumi bag for her work commute.

Bad & Bougie: The Best Luxury Lip Balms

best luxe lip balms - 05302.jpg

What was your initiation into lip balm? Mine was Lip Smackers at age 10, which always came in fun flavours, but never provided enough moisture.

Now that I’m a little older and a little wiser (and ya, a little richer), I find myself straight up splurging on Lip Balms. Sure, there are cheap and cheerful options, but these are the crème de la crème which are totally worth the hype.

Real Talk: Glossier

GLOSSIER

is finally in Canada. Here's the low down.

Being in your twenties is pretty amazing. It’s a time of discovery and learning who you are and what you like. You’re probably here looking for a review on Glossier products, and you’re gonna get one, but give me a second here.

As a girl (or guy) in your twenties, you’re confident enough to do a lot of things that you wouldn’t have dared in your teens. It’s likely that you also have a job(s) which allow you to party and splurge once in a while. When I received Glossier’s complete line-up of lip products I was immediately transported to 2005. I was fresh out of school after graduating with a liberal arts degree that only seemed to get me a string of unsatisfying admin jobs. I was also working part-time at a record store just for the discount (RIP HMV). I was also experimenting with makeup, had a ridiculous asymmetrical haircut, and way too many piercings (with cartilage scars as proof).

Enough about me here’s more deets on Glossier’s lip products.

GLOSSIER REVIEW

Original Balm Dotcom/Birthday Balm Dotcom

So the name of this stuff is just fantastic. Clap, clap for your copywriters, Glossier. It’s a universal salve that does what it says – it’s multi-purpose, seals in moisture and helps relieve chapped skin. The original is unscented, while the birthday scent is sweet and a little nauseating. My main beef with this is that it’s $15 and MADE WITH PETROLEUM JELLY. What. I ain’t paying $15 for synthetic ingredients when I can get good old Vaseline for a fraction of the cost. Pass. Next.

Lip Gloss

If you're looking to draw mad attention to your lips, a clear gloss like this is going to do the job. It's going to make your lips so glossy that people may have a tough time looking at anything else. Hot or distracting? Maybe a bit of both. Good thing about this gloss is that it isn't sticky. Bad thing is that it's $17, and that seems like a lot for a one trick pony.

Generation G in Leo/Zip

Straight from the website - “Generation G is a new kind of lip color that gives the look and finish of just-blotted lipstick, without the blot”. Is that true? Ya. Was it amazing? It was OH-KAY. The colours are quite nice and likely flattering for all skin tones, but it felt, well, cheap. It’s $20, which is close to what a MAC lipstick would cost, and we all know MAC lipstick is forever legit. It reminded me drugstore lipsticks that I’d buy on sale, then blot off for the same effect. For half the price, I think I’d rather just do that.

Glossier, I ain’t trying to hate on you. You’ve got your good points. And if was I was 24 and still figuring out what I like about beauty products, this would be a very different review. But I’m 35. I will straight up spend $50 on lipstick because I’m a grown ass woman with a good job and I can. I also like a good deal when I’m not splurging on a product, and these don’t feel like a good deal. They feel like well marketed products that will appeal to younger people who still have to choose between buying a lipstick or buying lunch. Glossier kind of reminds me of someone you’d date in your twenties – fun and cute, but kind of lacking substance. But over time could it be fun, cute and WONDERFUL? Sure, maybe, but not just yet.

YSL Volupté Tint-in-Balm

When it comes to lipsticks with ultra-luxurious packaging, few brands do it well. These YSL Volupté Tint-in-Balms might just be the chicest lip balms I've ever tried. While the formula is really nice and sleek on the lips, it's the packaging that won my heart over. What do you expect from a girl with a crazy collection of Saint Laurent shoes and bags?

Not only do these balms look good on your vanity, but they're also fun to play with. The sheer colours are as shiny as the sleek silver tube and perfect for summer. If you're the kinda girl who prefers lip balms and sheer tints over lipstick, you're gonna love these. They leave a subtle kiss of colour on the lips with a subtle peachy taste and scent that's light and pleasant.

The collection has eleven shades in total and I have three of the colours to review for you here - all in the pink family. Tease Me Pink (soft rose pink), Play Me Fuchsia (hot-pink fuchsia), and Seduce me Pink (luscious berry). I normally prefer coral, orange and red shades for my warm-medium skin tone, so I naturally gravitated towards Seduce Me Pink, the deepest of the three shades and the one with less pink.

Yves Saint Laurent Volupté Tint-in-Balm swatches and review - LIPSICK.ME_1.jpg

The longevity is exactly what one would expect from a shiny lip balm, which isn't much. A few sips of water later and you'll be reaching for that pretty silver YSL tube to reapply. On the other hand, the formula is pretty hydrating and feels good on the lips thanks to the apricot butter and jojoba oil.

If you're looking for more longevity, I'd recommend lining your lips with lip pencil first so the balm has something to stick to. It's my favourite trick to making tinted balms last longer.

Yves Saint Laurent Volupté Tint-in-Balm swatches and review - LIPSICK.ME_1553.JPG

The tops of the lip balms have the cutest details of a silhouette of a lip that goes all the way to the bottom of the tube so it never runs out. It's the attention to detail like this, and the beautiful silver bullet with the gold YSL raised letters that makes these balms so special. Sure, the formula is great but I just can't get over the beautiful packaging!
